On this day, 6 August 1945, the American bomber Enola Gay dropped the first atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. 3 days later, another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Japan surrendered shortly afterwards, thereby avoiding the loss of life and injury of many hundreds of thousands American troops and Japanese troops and civilians.
Object lesson: Making America reallay angry is a losing proposition. Admiral Yamamoto, Japan's priemier naval strategist, said "We have awakened a sleeping giant" - and his homeland paid the price.
