See Dr. Pournelle's take on the case HERE.
...I ask: why is it a crime to lie to a federal investigator? Submitting a signed statement under penalty of perjury is one thing; to blow off an inquisitive investigator on a fishing trip is quite another, and should the the right of any citizen (as opposed to a subject).

Dr. Pournelle further makes the points that:
1. She was prosecuted for proclaiming, in public, her innocence of any crime. 2. Making false statements, while not under oath, to Federal Officers. 3. And further, what she denied, while not under oath, wasn't a crime to begin with!
I am not a subject. I am a citizen. I will demand that my employees (the Federal Government) inform me as to my rights to counsel before any questioning, on any subject. And then, I just may decline to answer anyway.
Scroom.
