- - - - - Iraq and Syria - - - - -

If you hadn't noticed, Syria has been taking a PR beating the last few days. The assasination in Lebanon has been blamed on Syria - and the Lebanese people, Christian and Muslim, have been demonstrating in the streets, together, for the Syrians to get out. There was a bombing in Israel, by Palestinians allegedly operating from Syria - and the Israelis are casting a very public gimlet eye upon the Syrians. Iraq and the US have been, fairly quietly, blaming the Syrians for offering safe harbor to various Baathists and former members of Saddam Hussein's regime.

During this last week, Syria blinked, and the Syrians in Lebanon started moving towards their own borders.

Today, the Syrians blinked harder.

They handed Saddam's half-brother and a bunch of others over to the Iraqis - trying to prove they're with the good guys.

Now, why would President-for-Life Assad of Syria do that?

D'you think he feels that President-for-Life might be a short-term deal unless he gets his stuff together? And why hand over the half-brother and the other Baathists, unless his analysis shows, to him at least, that the "insurgents" are on the losing side?

Just a little food for thought.

A big storm front just went through here today. At least 2 inches of rain in the last 12 hours, and that made driving very interesting indeed.

I had to be out on I-95 earlier today. Visibility sucked - the rain was so heavy that the windshield wipers couldn't keep up with it. The fastest I went was 50mph, and that scared me bad enough to back right off to 40-45.

At least there aren't any land-slides here - this place is flatter than Kansas likes to brag about.
