- - - - - Another Year - - - - -

OWW has had himself quite a year.

Actually, it's been a thirteen-month roller-coaster ride.

On December 17th of 2003, I loaded the Ferocious Beast and my cranky old self onto an airplane to make the long journey from San Jose, CA to Camden County, GA, to join Mrs. OWW and our two daughters. Five days later, I'm standing in line at the local super market when my cell phone rings, and it's our San Jose Realtor telling me that the San Jose house is SOLD! Man, that was fast!

The remainder of December and the early part of January were spent finding a house near St. Marys, GA to buy. We took possession of The Swamp, outside the city limits of Kingsland, GA, in early February.

Meanwhile, the Great Job Hunt has been creaking along, and I finally picked up a part-time gig at a local hole-in-the-wall computer store, where I'm learning more about Windows XP Home than I ever wanted to. To tell the truth, it's really so much fun that I've been talking the guy I work with about opening up our own shop, with some decent visibility for walk-in, walk-by customers, right next door to two major retailers. Rather frightening, actually, because I've never run a small business. I suspect it's going to be a major learning experience.

Did I mention bugs? Not the software kind, the creepy/crawley/flying kind of bug. Georgia's got plenty of them.

Did I mention hurricanes? Three of them came within shouting distance. Frances did a real number on my parents-in-law's place in Cocoa Beach, FL, about two hundred miles south of us. We provided refuge for them, and my brother-in-law during Hurricane Frances' voyage of destruction.

We had an election. I'm still trying to figure out Georgia politics, which is not at all like California politics. For instance, the Georgia Governor, Assembly, and Senate are ALL Republican, for the first time since Reconstruction. Very strange to me, 'cause California has been a Democrat stronghold the entire time I lived there - a little matter of 43 years.

My two girls are enrolled in dance classes, and they're doing well at school, and are, to my eyes at least, much more energetic than they were in San Jose. That may be due to the living situation. The Swamp is on a cul-de-sac in a semi-rural area, there's other kids all over the place, so more stimulus, therefore more run-run-run-play-visit-yell-play-run and repeat as necessary. Makes me tired just to watch, makes my ears hurt with the shrieks and shouts, but I smile a lot!

Back in August, Mrs. OWW had a hospital stay of a week with an intestinal ailment called diverticulitis (More info HERE). Surgery was avoided, but the Mrs. was in very shaky shape for a month. She is now avoiding foods that have tiny little seeds, such as tomatoes, and hasn't had a recurrence. Bro-in-law Brian also had a hospital stay related to surgery he had in December of '03 - but now all seems to be well with him.

All in all, 2004 was a pretty good year. We're looking forward to 2005, which we think will be much better.
