What is it about America that draws the eye?
Sometimes it's our wealth. Sometimes it's our power. Sometimes it's our Weird-Harold entertainers.
And, sometimes it's our own commentary on why we are the way we are.
It's obvious that we Americans do not extend our massive resources in times of need in order to obtain love and acceptance or in order to reciprocate any love and acceptance that has been shown to us previously.
We do it merely because it’s the American thing to do.

Just like many other Americans, I kicked in a few bucks for the tsunami relief effort as a matter of course. Didn't even think about it. Now, Juliette's commentary (HERE) made me stop and think a bit, and do a little remembering.
'Way back in 1972, my ship, the USS Jason, was in the Phillipines. During monsoon season, it rains a lot in the PI. Some little village up in the hills got flooded, and some of those folks needed a hand. So, some of our guys scrounged up some transportation, some tools, some food, some medical supplies, all paid for by contributions from the guys on the Jason. Everybody on board kicked in $5, as I recall. That's 700+ guys, far from home, and not paid a whole hell of a lot, at $5 a pop. And it never occurred to us to even think about it.
Why do we do that?
We do it merely because it’s the American thing to do.
