(Note: This was supposed to be posted much earlier today. I'm a klotz.)
- - - - - At Home Today - - - - -
MeelieNo, our six-year-old, is feeling poorly and has been running a fever for the last two days, so she's staying home today, instead of going to school. Right now, she's sleeping. As an experiment, I gave her a light shake on the shoulder. She'll normally start to wake up, but this time she didn't even twitch. She's really not feeling well at all.
DaMooj, the ten-year-old, is our clothes horse. She changes when she gets home from school. She changes before and after dinner. She puts on different clothing if the breeze changes from south to south-by-southeast. She leaves all the discards scattered here, there, and everywhere. This morning, she sniveled, groaned, and moaned that "I don't have a thing to wear, Daddy!"
She got on the school bus wearing flowered capris, a t-shirt with a design on the front (I forget which one - sign of senility?) worn with the bottom outside of the waistband of the capris, and a zip-front sweatshirt that's shorter in length than the t-shirt. I tried getting her to tuck the t-shirt in, to look a little neater, right? "Dad," she says patiently, "Out is cool, in is not."
I'm telling you, I just can't wait for those Wonderful Teen Years.
- - - - - More Good Computer Stuff That I Use - - - - -
Almost all the software I write about here is free, or nearly so.
There's no particularly good reason for that, aside from being a cheapskate, anyway. It's just that much of the freeware is much better than the stuff you get from the major vendors.
For instance, if Microsoft had put together a utility CD for Windows like the one I wrote about yesterday, I'd have paid money, real money, for it years ago. See my post about the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows HERE.
NoteTab Light, which I'm using to write this post, is Notepad on steroids. It's available HERE, for no charge. Unfortunately, NoteTab or it's equivalents are not available for Linux, at least that I've been able to find. I really like the way that NoteTab works. Find it HERE.
I'm currently evaluating AVG AntiVirus, which is a freebie for individual users, and available HERE.
Mozilla, as a replacement for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express is available HERE.
Another replacement for IE is called Maxthon, and is "It is based on the Internet Explorer engine (your most likely current web browser) which means that what works in IE, works the same in Maxthon but with many additional efficient features", according to them. One of the good features is tabs across the top, and it does have the "look and feel" of IE, which means it's instantly usable. Of course, if it's built on the IE engine, does that mean it has the security holes that IE has? Maxthon says not. Maxthon is available HERE, and it too is a freebie. I've been using Maxthon for about a week now, and so far, I like it.
