- - - - - One Step Closer to Commericial Space Flight? - - - - -

Privately built SpaceShip One made it's second trip within fourteen days into space today. The Burt Rutan-designed sub-orbital craft, piloted by test pilot Brian Binney, soared more than 62 miles above Earth to claim the Ansari X Prize, awarded to the first space craft capable of carrying 3 people above 62 miles twice within fourteen days.

While the $10 million prize doesn't even begin to cover costs, estimated at more than $40 million, it is a giant first step. The privately designed, developed, and built space craft is the first non-governmental space craft capable of carrying passengers to near space.

See the storyHERE.

Congratulations are due to Burt Rutan, designer and visionary, Paul Allen, who financed the project, and to the people of Scaled Composites ( HERE ) who made the dream come true.

I probably won't get to go, dammit. But my children will be able to!
