- - - - - Illegal Aliens Get A Free Pass in Oakland, CA - - - - -
The Oakland, Calif. PD were getting drunk drivers off the streets by setting up roadblocks and checking on the sobriety of the drivers that were stopped. All very laudable, and definitely something the PD should be doing, right?
Well, it seems there was a just a little hitch in the plan. It seems that illegal aliens were getting caught up in the roadblocks. Illegal aliens can't get driver's licenses. Without a DL, you can't drive a car. You roll up to the roadblock, can't produce a DL, and the car gets towed, at a cost of $125 to ransome it back later. Same thing if you collect a DUI.
A politician of the Illegal Alien Party, Oakland City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente, along with Jesus Rodriguez of Oakland Community Organizations, raised enough cain that the Oakland PD stopped doing the checks.
It would appear that Fuente and Rodriguez support the "right" of the illegal aliens to drive an un-insured car over the right of the citizenry to empower their police department to get the drunks off the road.
Of course, not everyone agrees with Fuente and Rodriguez -
However, the month-long moratorium on checkpoints has outraged Councilmember Larry Reid (Elmhurst-East Oakland), who calls the change a threat to public safety.
"It is absolutely insane to stop these checkpoints," Reid said. "I would not want to explain to a mother why we stopped doing these checkpoints when we know they work and her son or daughter was killed." |
