Local lore has it that the Navy located the Kings Bay Submarine Base in Kings Bay because hurricanes don't hit there. Due to the local geography, they're just supposed to slide on by, leaving at the most a lot of rain and a little wind.
I sure hope that's true, as Hurricane Frances begins to look like it might come rumbling ashore somewhere between South Florida and North Carolina. That is, if she doesn't get turned to the north by the Gulf Stream and miss the mainland entirely.
In California we worried about earthquakes. I was around for the 1989 Loma Prieta quake. It came out of nowhere and scared the living daylights out of Mrs. OWW and me, and killed a bunch of folks who were minding their own business on a stretch of two-decker freeway called the Cypress Structure. Like I said, it came as a big surprise.
On the whole, I prefer hurricanes, because I can see them coming. If I have to, I can grab the Mrs., the kids, and the idiot dog and run for higher ground.

I'm going to hold off on political commentary for a while.
My current view tends towards Will Rogers - "Politics is applesauce". It's the Republicans' turn to lambaste the Democrats. Rudy Giuliani just did a pretty good job of demonizing and vilifying, and got a few laughs while he was about it.
Geezo, political conventions are boring, even if Rudy gets a few good zingers in.
