- - - - - Things Computerish - - - - -
Here at The Swamp, we have two PCs that have Linux on them.
One is my main desktop system - a Celeron 1.7 gig with 512M of memory. It also has one of those nifty slide out drive trays, so I can swap drives out easily. That's very convenient because the drive I'm working on now is what I call "experimental" - if it goes belly-up for whatever reason, nothing bad will happen except that I'll exercise some of the vocabulary that my Uncle Sam taught me while I was in the Navy. (note: Chief Lloyd was an absolute artiste. I once heard him go for 2 minutes without drawing a breath, nor did he repeat himself, nor did he swear. A truly great command of invective.) My other system that has Linux is an older Dell server box that has Debian installed on it. The learning curve on that one is steep.
Anyway, Snowbell (my main desktop system) also has a drive with Windows 2000 Professional, which contains all of my "live" data that I really don't want to lose. I also keep backups of the data on CDRW that is swapped out to a neighbor periodically. That drive is treated with kid gloves.
I'm considering changing the status of those drives.
Xandros (info HERE) is up and running. I'm doing this post in MS Word, running on Linux through a thingie called CrossOver Office (info HERE). That part is really neat - I can do whatever's needed in MS Word without swapping drives. Outlook 2000 works just fine - I even imported my email from Outlook on Win2K into Outlook on Xandros Linux.
For now, my critical data will continue to reside on the Win2K drive. When I have a good confidence level, I'll migrate completely to Xandros Linux, and stop using MS Office after ensuring that all the bits and pieces I need can be done in Star Office.
Things that I still need to find a Linux equivalent for:
NoteTab (info HERE) is a replacement for Windows Notepad. You can have multiple text docs open, and it has what I would call macros embedded into it that lets you insert HTML into your text document. NoteTab is what I've been using to compose and manage my posts to OWW.
RoboType, by Gregory Wolking, is a simple, easy to use macro utility that I got some years ago from PC Magazine Online (www.pcmag.com). Just type a slash plus the assigned abbreviation, and your long string of characters automagically appears, no matter what Windows application you're in. For instance, typing "/blue" (without the quotes) gives the text "- - - - - You Might Be A Blueneck If... - - - - -" (again, without the quotes). Very handy, and combined with NoteTab, it's very useful indeed.
