- - - - - Politically Incorrect - - - - -
The San Jose Mercury News, my old home-town newspaper is reporting this:
Patrick Herndon, a senior at Fremont's Irvington High School, has plans to start a cultural club next year. Like many of the other campus clubs, his would focus on his heritage and raise awareness about its roots.
But Patrick, 16, is white -- and he knows that his idea for a Caucasian Cultures club is bound to receive some harsh criticism and maybe even allegations of racism. But he's prepared to argue his point.
``I think people will consider it to be racist and they won't let us do it because they think we will try to infringe on the rights of other races,'' Patrick said. ``But by not allowing us to have a club, it infringes on our rights as Americans.'' |
This brings up two issues: "Fair" and "From Many, One"
"Fair" is one thing - every one is treated the same way. By that standard, young Mr. Herndon is completely correct. Unfortunately, in this era of "Political Correctness", he's gonna get hammered by every single one of the "minority" groups. By the way, did you know that there is no majority ethnic group in California? Everybody is a minority, defined as less than 50% of the population.
"E Pluribus Unum" is the ideal of the United States. On that ideal, there should be no ethno-centric "club" allowed on any state-supported campus in the US.
Old Wierd Ward has always maintained that there is just one color grouping - Red, White, and Blue. Anything else is just getting in the way. In some cases, these "clubs" are clearly divisive, and are, themselves, "racist".
