I've found an acceptable editor. And it's included in Debian, upon which Xandros is based. It's called "Kate" (KDE Advanced Text Editor). Of course, to find it, already installed on my drive, I had to Google "linux text editors", which brought up Kate. Then I went to the Debian site, and sure enough, Kate is listed as being in the distro, in /usr/bin.
Boy, am I sheeeeepish.
Kate accepts plugins, which means that at some point I might be able to get the functionality I had with NoteTab. It already has multiple open docs capability, although it doesn't use tabs along the top. It has a list along the left side, which works just fine for me.
Now to chase down a keyboard macro utility that'll run in the KDE gue environment...
