- - - - - Ronald Wilson Reagan - - - - -

My first real memory of Ronald Reagan was when he came to speak at Palisades High School, where I was a student. It was 1967, and he was Governor of California. I was seventeen.

A student asked him a question. I do not remember the question, nor do I remember Reagan's reply. I do remember that Gov. Reagan was pretty sharp-toned, bordering on rudeness - probably because the question itself was fairly rude. I also remember my reaction - "Why that son-of-a-gun! He was rude!"

Later, of course, he was President of the United States. I watched him closely, and found that I agreed with his positions much more than I disagreed. I respected him, although I didn't much like him.

His two great accomplishments: Giving the Evil Empire a little push into oblivion (I hope). And his infectious optimism, that the "limits" espoused by James Earl Carter were a figment of Carter's mind, and that America is, indeed, the land of opportunity.

President Ronald Wilson Reagan, 40th President of the United States.
