NOTICE: "Veg-out Day" has been cancelled.

- - - - - Prisoner Abuse and Politics - - - - -

The Democrats want SecDef Rumsfeld's head on a platter. That's not going to happen - because the Department of Defense has done it's job properly. The malefactors are being punished, and the whole world knows that America does The Right Thing.

Let's review a bit:

A number of Iraqi prisoners, who were being held in Abu Ghraib prison, were abused by some of the guards assigned by the US Army to guard them. These are not nice people - they were suspected of manufacturing or planting road-side bombs to kill US Armed Forces personnel. Still, they were prisoners placed in the custody of these guards.

The guards apparantly acted like idiots, and did idiotically gross, nasty, and criminal things to their prisoners. Now the guards are getting their bottoms whacked - relieved of duty, and possibly court-martialed, with the possibility of prison terms. The top commander, BG Janis L. Karpinski, has been relieved of her command.

All this is happening in the open.

This is The American Way.

The investigation started back in January, and was pretty much completed, and charges were being filed by military authorities, by the time the media noticed that anything at all was going on.

In other words, the "System" worked just the way it's supposed to. Wrong-doing has been uncovered, and the perpetrators, and those who were merely negligent in the performance of their duties, have been identified, and will be punished, all according to letter and spirit of the law.

Which brings up this question: If the "System" has worked the way it's supposed to, why should any Senator or Representative be calling for the resignation/firing of the Secretary of Defense? Election-year politics, maybe?

And, if the "System" has worked the way it's supposed to, why should the President of the United States apologize to anyone?
