- - - - - Nick Berg - - - - -
After much thought and reflection, here's my reaction to the murder of Nick Berg.
First, the facts.
Nick Berg traveled to Iraq of his own volition, on his own nickel. He knew, or should have known that Iraq is a hazardous place. He was taken by Al Quaeda, and was murdered by decapitation. Al Quaeda video-taped the murder, then dumped his corpse in Baghdad.
OWW's Analysis:
My reactions are colored by the fact that I have viewed the video, sound and all.
The hooded persons, most likely male, are, without doubt, barbarians. They are, unfortunately, human, but they are barbarians. From the reaction throughout the Islamic world, ranging from mild disapproval to out-and-out jubilation, I would have to say that the Islamic world is a barbaric world, populated by people whose standard of behavior is rooted in the fourteenth century.
How does one deal with barbarians? Shall we declare Crusade against the barbarians?
For a certainty, we should, forthwith, remove advanced weapons from the hands of the barbarians. If they won't give them up voluntarily, we must remove them by the correct application of force.
We've made a start in Iraq. It now appears that some unknown quantity of apparatus for the manufacture of WMDs, or the WMDs themselves, may have been removed to Syria. We also know that Iran is pursuing nuclear research. Plus, of course, North Korea.
Those three need to be dealt with, and soon.
Dare we leave WMDs in the hands of barbarians? I think not.
