I know, I said I wouldn't do any serious stuff today.
I lied. So sue me.

When we were still living in San Jose, Mrs. OWW and I put our two youngsters in a private school, at considerable expense.
Why?
More than half of the kids in our elementary school district were from foreign countries. More than half of those spoke English poorly, if at all. And they were not in total immersion English classes. They were mixed in with all the other kids.
The whole story that triggered the above is HERE. In Camden County, Georgia, where we now live, the school district no longer does "social promotion" of kids that are doing failing work. My kids are being stretched a bit, working a little harder, and everyone speaks English.
And back in San Jose?
"Where else in the world does anyone accept 'D work' but in public schools?'' says Pete Murchison, principal at Fremont's Irvington High School, which has done away with D's altogether.
...Still, some wonder whether the new grading scheme demands too much from students who aren't shooting for spots at Stanford or even Cal State-Stanislaus.
Boy, am I ever glad I'm not in California anymore!
