- - - - - Foreign Students Don't Want to Pay Fee - - - - -

It appears that the University of Massachusetts, in order to pay for a federally mandated tracking program for foreign students, is tacking on a $65 fee for each foreign student.

Other students at UMass don't like this, and say that all students (or their parents, more likely), should pay an extra $10 or so to fund the mandate.

See the story HERE.

Commentary:On an emotional level, I think of a student pilot named Mohammed Atta. On an intellectual level, I think that the users of a system should fund that system. Either way, I think the foreign students should pay this fee, NOT the parents of the citizen students.

(Tip o'the Hat to John Dominik. He also makes some very cool hand-made pens.)

- - - - - HAMAS Founder Killed - - - - -

Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, founder of HAMAS, was killed today by the Israeli Armed Forces.

Yassin was the "spiritual leader" of HAMAS, much revered by Palestinians.

Why was he so revered?

Suicide bombings? Check.

Drive-by shootings? Check.

Bus bombs? Check.

Random killing just for the hell of it? Check.

Palestinians have the same sort of land that the Israelis do. The Israelis have worked hard, built a democratic society, and live well. That drives the Palestinians crazy. And they behave crazily.

Scroom.

I'm glad that Yassin is dead. "Well done" to the IDF.

I will be glad when bin Laden is confirmed to be dead, too. Brothers under the skin and all that.

- - - - - Am I a Jacksonian? - - - - -

One of the things that political theorists like to do is hang labels on groups of people. Conservatives, Liberals, New Deal Democrats, that sort of thing.

Michael J. Totten, writing at TechCentral Station (article HERE) has defined four groups, with interesting characteristics.

The group I would most closely identify with would be the Jacksonians, with elements from the other three. But, as a caveat, this grouping tends to change on a daily basis. Some days, I want the rest of the world to leave us alone. Other days, I want the US to play international policeman. On yet other days, I applaud the idea of a US fully engaged with the UN. (That's when I know that I'm really, really ill and delerious!)

Read the article. Are you Jacksonian? Wilsonian? Jeffersonian? Hamiltonian? A mixture?
