Robert Thompson has a take on why Linux isn't ready for general use as a desktop OS. It isn't the OS, it's the applications that are available.

I would add that the office suites available really are crude, by comparison to MS Office, or even to the Windows version of WordPerfect Office.

My hope is that Sun (StarOffice) gets their stuff together well enough to make MS sweat a little bit. Judging by my usage of RH9 and associated programs, they aren't quite there yet. The OS is fine, the apps are lacking in "fit and polish".
