- - - - - Scandal in Oil for Food Program - - - - -
The UN Oil for Food program was supposed to allow Saddam's Iraq to exchange oil for food and medicines for the people of Iraq. Instead, it would appear that Saddam milked this program for his own benefit - not a big surprise.
And then, well-meaning idiots (Yes, I'm being charitable) circulated petitions claiming that the Evil United States had caused all this grief to the Iraqi people. See the petition HERE.
A growing chorus of people, in this country and around the world, are demanding an end to the murderous sanctions against Iraq, which are a direct result of U.S. government policy. The sanctions have taken a staggering toll among Iraqi civilians--especially the sick, the elderly and, above all, children under the age of 5.
The list of people who may have been involved in this skulduggery is just a little surprising, though.
Benon Sevan, the executive director of the UN Oil for Food office.
Iraqi American businessman Shaker Al-Khaffaji, who put up $400,000 to produce a film by ex-U.N. weapons inspector Scott Ritter, which aimed to discredit weapons inspections in Iraq.
British Labor MP George Galloway, a strident foe of taking action against Saddam.
Former French Interior Minister Charles Pasqua
Patrick Maugein, CEO of the oil company Soco International and financial backer of French President Jacques Chirac
Former French Ambassador to the United Nations Jean-Bernard Merimee
Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri
Syrian businessman Farras Mustafa Tlass, the son of longtime Syrian Defense Minister Mustafa Tlass
Leith Shbeilat, chairman of the anti-corruption committee of the Jordanian Parliament
And, of course, the various French, Russian, and German businesses that benefitted from the program.
Are there going to be any red faces? Any prosecutions? Any consequences to these theives at all? Or even a serious investigation?
Don't bet on it.
See the whole disgusting story HERE.
