My Dad, at 80, is what I call a "naive user". He doesn't want to know about the guts, doesn't want to know about the Windows Control Panel, doesn't want to know exactly where his Word files are located. He just wants to double-click on the Word icon, hit the open button in the Word control bar, and Presto! There's his document. He just wants his browser to work. He just wants his email to work. He just wants his cable modem connection to be there when he wants it. He doesn't want to fuss with it, it just has to work, whatever "it" is.

Of course, things get lost. Stuff disappears. Usually, his docs are in the right place, but Word has it's NORMAL.DOT template screwed up. Dad doesn't want to know about it, he just wants it to work.

My techie sister lives in Portland OR, and Dad lives in Olympia WA. I'm 'way out here in Camden County GA. Kinda hard to pop over to Dad's place to fix stuff.

Sis and I corresponded a bit, then talked a bit. She went up to Oly yesterday and installed VNC, which stands for Virtual Network Computing.

VNC is remote control software for computers. It runs on Windows, Linux, Unix, you name it.

This will allow Sis and I to remotely troubleshoot his PC problems without trying to do the phone support thingie.

IF you need remote control capability, VNC might be for you. Be sure to read the security stuff in the docs.

Get it HERE, for absolutely free.

Yawn. I'm having a hard time getting excited over this.

I'm having some difficulty remembering that I'm now in the Eastern time zone, not the Pacific time zone. Very strange when I want to call someone and I have to stop and think about what time zone we're in.
