Fire up the 'WayBack Machine, Sherman!
'Way back in the early '80s (1982?), an outfit named Novell came out with the first practical and reliable networking OS for PCs. It was called NetWare, and did very well. Microsoft had nothing at that time.
What NetWare did best was file and print services. That made sense at the time, as a LaserJet cost something over $1000 back then, and disk space was considered economical at $10/Megabyte.
Then, in the mid 90's, Microsoft got serious about networking, and released WindowsNT, and the downhill slide for Novell started. Using it's famous FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) tactics, Microsoft eventually displaced Novell as the premier supplier of networking software for PCs.
But is Novell now poised for a comeback? With the latest announcement of NetWare converging with and into SuSe Linux, Novell seems to have declared that they are serious about moving the company forward. See the E-Week article HERE.
... the kernel from the next version of NetWare, Version 7.0, would be included in the first version of Open Enterprise Server, which is expected to ship by the end of this year—a year ahead of schedule.
The SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 kernel will also be included in Open Enterprise Server - but will also be retained as a standalone SuSe Linux product—as will a rich collection of networking services, including Nterprise Linux Services, which will transparently interoperate between the two environments...
- - - - - Israel Doesn't Mess Around - - - - -
According to this story, Israel has decided that Hamas itself is a clear and present danger, and is therefore going kill every Hamas leader it can catch. No ifs, ands, or buts.
...officials decided to go after the entire Hamas leadership without waiting for another attack by the militant group.
In the article, Israeli officials are also quoted as saying that Arafat is now a target.
If I were those guys I'd be thinking seriously about a sudden change in climate. When the Israelis make up their minds to take someone out, they don't mess about.
- - - - - Is Iraq (Or any other mid-Eastern State) Ready for Democracy - - - - -
Dr. Pournelle makes a cogent argument that Iraq may not be ready for any kind of democracy any time soon. His reasoning is persuasive. See it HERE.
Excerpt: It is only when you have a large middle class and few fanatics determined to change the whole arrangement that you get rule of law and stability from democracies.
A large middle class has a long habit of protection by the rule of law. Iraq has hardly had that. Rule of thug is more like it.

Any thoughts I might have had about visiting Britain just went out the window.
It would appear that defending yourself against armed robbers is not only illegal, but can net you some serious jail time. See it HERE.
And, of course, failure of the police to protect the real victim of this injustice never came up at all.
And will Carl Lindsay wind up as a "political prisoner" on Human Rights Watch? Don't count on it.
