"Spyware" or "Adware" can do some Very Bad things to your computer, and to you. This article at PCMag.com goes into some detail, so I'll just hit the high points. Read the whole article, please.
This stuff, at the very least, clogs up your system so that performance suffers. It may also force your internet browser to a new homepage, record your keystrokes (including banking info) and send it off to who-knows-where for use by Evil Persons. Thoroughly Bad Stuff.
Mrs. OWW and I use something called AdAware (available for free HERE) at least once a week.
AdAware is Highly Recommended by Old Wierd Ward.
