- - - - - The United Nations - - - - -

I've seen Letters to the Editor (in "real" newspapers) and screeds in the blogospere advocating booting the United Nations out of New York.

The reasoning is that the diplomats accredited to the UN don't much like the US, and aren't shy about saying so. In addition to which, the suckers are really rude. Besides, that'd be a neat building to house some of our domestic refugees, yes?

Well, I hearken to Machiavelli. The quote isn't exact, but runs something like this: "Keep your friends close, that they might remain friends. Keep your enemies closer, that they might be closely watched."

If we allow them to stay, we can keep an eye on them, and perhaps even influence them a little. Not to mention, if we get real displeased with them, we can allow the cops to guard them "loosely", and let our home-grown low-lifes toget a little closer. With our deepest regrets, of course.
