- - - - - Jobs and The Great Move - - - - -

One of the minor reasons we decided to move to the South-east Georgia area was/is the job opportunities for OWW. Mrs. OWW's employer, the LDC (Large Defense Co.) moved us out here, and Mrs. OWW has been with LDC for 20+ years, AND the operation here in GA isn't likely to go away any time soon.

So I was gratified when a contracting outfit I've worked with in the past gave me a jingle and asked if I was available for a 1-year gig here in Georgia. There's just one little-itty-bitty catch: the job is centered in Atlanta, with travel to the surrounding areas. Our new home is in the South-east corner of GA, about 300 miles from Atlanta.

I could take the job, spend my week-days in Atlanta and the surrounding area, then come home on weekends. I'd have to rent a place in/near Atlanta for about $800/month (furnished), and put at least 600 miles/week on the road, AND not see the 9-year-old and 5-year-old during the week.

Reluctantly, I had to pass on this one. Fortunately for us, we're in the position where I don't have to take the job for financial reasons. Mrs. OWW's job with the LDC is paying California rates, and what with the lowered cost of living, especially in the housing area, we can make out adequately, once the house in San Jose closes escrow.

If the job was centered around Jacksonville, FL, I'd have taken it in a hot second.

Damn....

Speaking of jobs and working, my email buddy John Dominick (his site is HERE) appears to have been RIFfed, yet again. Any kind thoughts you might have could be directed his way.

John's situation and mine are remarkably similar. Out of the last 4 years, we haven't worked much, about 50%-60% of the time. In the previous 20 years, we were gainfully (and sometimes painfully) employed, with only very minor breaks, doing jobs that needed doing, that provided some sense of accomplishment, AND put a nickel or two in the old bank account.
