- - - - - Energy Bill - - - - -

According to the Washington Times (story HERE), the big sticking point in the energy bill that was denied a vote by the Senate, was that...

Opponents objected most to a provision, insisted on by House negotiators, that shields petrochemical companies from some lawsuits over methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), a fuel additive that has contaminated water supplies in hundreds of communities nationwide.

What the Times story does NOT tell you is that in 1990 the Congress mandated that some cities with air pollution problems use gasoline that has 2% Oxygen by weight. The two additives that provide this are MTBE and ethanol. At the time, ethanol, when available, cost a bunch more than MTBE. In fact, California specifically required MTBE.

So there's some justice to both sides of this. On balance, due to the requirements of government regs, I'd be inclined to come down on the side of the petrochemical companies.

I had a short bit on the JFK assasination here. I've removed it. Not because it was bad, or conspiracy-related, or even because it was drippy. I just decided that everyone and his grandmother has said everything there was to say about this.

So, yeah, I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing.
