- - - - - We Should Trust Our Government? - - - - -
This story (HERE) details the ways that Our Glorious Government is using the so-called "USA Patriot Act".
Here's one example:
"A North Carolina county prosecutor charged a man accused of running a methamphetamine lab with breaking a new state law barring the manufacture of chemical weapons. If convicted, Martin Dwayne Miller could get 12 years to life in prison for a crime that usually brings about six months.
Prosecutor Jerry Wilson says he isn't abusing the law, which defines chemical weapons of mass destruction as "any substance that is designed or has the capability to cause death or serious injury" and contains toxic chemicals."
Now, I've got no sympathy for meth cookers and the like. But.... if you really want to cuff 'em and stuff 'em, get the existing laws for that offense changed.
I remember that Ashcroft, Bush, and Co. promised that the Patriot Act would only be used against terrorists. Miller might be a druggie, but he's a home-grown knothead, hardly a "terrorist".
Further, I remember the abuses that the Federal Gov't under Johnson and Nixon pulled (I was in high school when Johnson was president). And that's why the statutes against their abuses were enacted by the Congress.
So now, we have to do it all over again.
Damn.....
