- - - - - Microsoft - - - - -
On the same day that Microsoft won a contract with the Department of Homeland Security (story HERE), there was revealed a major, big-time security bug (story HERE), and the Official Microsoft Announcement and patch is available from Microsoft HERE.
Old Weird Ward's Analysis: If you're behind a firewall, hardware or software, you should be OK. By all means, install the patch (We are behind a hardware/software firewall. I installed the patch anyway. I really am paranoid!)
Old Weird Ward's Commentary: There's sure to be a storm of criticism aimed at Microsoft for shipping "buggy and insecure operating system software". This is a bum rap, in my opinion. I do have issues with Microsoft's marketing practices, but not with their OS group's programmers and developers. This is a case where, since Microsoft is the most visible target, everybody and his grandmother will:
(A) Scratch around to find any kind of a flaw, and
(B) Scream to the assembled multitude "Look what we found! They really are evil!"
