- - - - - The Personal Cost of Personal Computers - - - - -
At Bob Thompson's site (link HERE) he has a break-down of the costs of building an advanced, and very fast desktop PC. I've found the following rule of thumb to be true over the last 4 years or so:
"For $800, you can build your own PC, and it will be 1 1/2 steps back from the bleeding edge of technology. It will be fast and reliable. It will be suitable for daily use for at least 2 years, and maybe as long as 4 years." This rule of thumb does not apply to development systems, of course.
With that in mind, I'm planning to do an upgrade of the box that SWMBO uses. It will look something like what Bob is building for his wife, and will cost about what he is spending. And what will happen to the old 700Mhz box? I'll turn it into a server, what else? Then I can finally retire the old 333Mhz that is our current server.
