- - - - - Reviving the Draft?- - - - -

Rep. Pete Stark (Dem Calif) has proposed reviving the military draft.

What a bonehead!

The notion is that "military service will be an obligation for everyone, not just the lower-income and middle-class".

Let's see here - during the Viet Nam undeclared war, all branches of the armed forces had people in them (yours truly included) who just wanted to get out and go home. The only reason I joined the Navy for 4 years was to stay out of the Army - I didn't think that a year in the 'Nam would do me much good. Once I was in, I found that there was actually some good stuff about the Navy, but had I been offered an early out, I would have taken it in a heart-beat.

Also during the Viet Nam Undeclared War, all of the services had severe drug problems. Smoking grass, on-duty and off-duty, was common-place. On my ship, while in Hong Kong, we had a guy die from a heroin OD. This sort of thing did not help morale.

Also during Viet Nam, do you know how many children of Congress-critters actually joined up? A few, but not many. Certainly very few of them were actually drafted. And those that joined up were always handled with kid gloves.

So, Mr. Stark, you want the draft back? I think that's a Really Dumb Idea.
