- - - - - Third World America? - - - - -
Even the Washington Times (of Washington, DC) has taken note of two disturbing trends. Columnist Paul Craig Roberts (full story here) expounds on the export of US jobs, and the import of foreign labor.
As far as the Software Industry is concerned, it is definitely true that companies like H1B visa holders for two reasons:
1. They come cheap
2. If they quit, or are fired, they can no longer stay in the US legally, because the conditions of an H1B visa specify the place that they are employed.
Which means
3. They ain't too likely to make a fuss for fear of 1 & 2 above.
The result of all this is that the citizenry (that's you and me, folks) have a hard time getting and keeping a job.
There is one other consideration. A large part of the national security of the US resides in our design and manufacturing capability. When that expertise is no longer practiced in the US, we must import the designs and the finished goods. Look at the parts in your automobile, especially the electronic pieces that are so much a part of any modern automobile. Almost all of the electronic parts are designed elsewhere, and manufactured elsewhere. If the expertise to design electronic components that we use resides in a country that is not friendly to America, where does that leave us if this hostile country decides to slam the door? Or hold us up for more money?
SOL, friend, we are SOL.
We would have to re-learn to do that stuff all over again, and re-equip to do the manufacturing. All the while, this unfriendly country would be pulling ahead of us AND doing their best to convince us that we should pass laws to ensure that we can't rebuild our industries.
As another example, what company in America manufactures a TV set? Or a stereo? Or a video camera? Or a film camera?
Makes you think a bit? I certainly hope so!
