So - Old Wierd Ward is going to post more frequently, is he?

Ha!

There's a saying about roads and the best of intentions....

Over the next few days, you'll see references to stuff that happened during the Christmas season, and over the past two weeks. I'll get caught up, it'll just take a while.

Now that the madness known as Christmas is over and done for another year, and the ornaments have been put away, and the pine needles removed from the carpet, maybe I'll be able to get my garage cleaned out to the point that we can get both cars in there.

(Yeah, Ward, Suuuure you will!)

Well, I did say "maybe", didn't I?

My eldest daughter (22) has flown off to Spain for six months to study film production, and how they do it in Spain. This is sponsored by her college, so it counts for class credit for her major field of study. While I'm quite proud of her academic accomplishments, and extremely pleased by her common sense (which ain't so common, now is it?), I do tend to fret a bit. You may have noticed that the world can be a Really Ugly Place.

My middle daughter (8) just completed her 3rd grade middle-of-the-year assessment exams.

She did really well in 3rd grade Math, and Language, and Science, but not so good in Social Studies. We'll have to work on that. Note that this is not a California public school, but a private school.

There's a reason for that.

The district in which we live has a large proportion of immigrants who do not speak English as their first language. And their kids don't speak English very well either. This wouldn't be a problem, except that the district insists that the kids who don't speak English will be in the same classroom as the kids who do speak English.

Our private school won't accept kids who aren't proficient in English.

Every single kid in this private school is testing at or above the standards for the grade level as defined by the state dept. of education. Which is much more than you can say for the kids in the state-funded public schools in our district.

Meanwhile, I've started the process of updating my MCSE. I'm hammering away at Windows XP Professional, with the objective of passing that exam in the late-Feb/early-March timeframe.

For Christmas, SWMBO gave me a two CD set of the Rolling Stones called "40 Licks". This set has a bunch of their good stuff on it.

"So what?"

Well, while we were going up to the barber shop to get my hair trimmed back a bit, I started playing the first CD on the car's CD player.

The third track is the classic "Satisfaction", and I just sang along with it. (This was first recorded in 1966, when Mick Jagger still had a voice). At the end of the track, both the girls (ages 4 and 8) said "Play it again, Daddy!". So we played it again. Three times. And would Daddy NOT sing along? And would I please bump up the volume?

Can you see the bumper sticker? "Your kid likes Rap-Crap. My kid likes Rock 'n Roll!"
