- - - - - Linux - - - - -

SWMBO has taken exception to my reporting of "our" situation with Linux.

SHE did do the install, and only needed me to answer 2 questions about the hardware (true).

Otherwise, she has been doing ALL of the experimentation and exploration. She's even learning how the command-line works. And she's also starting to experiment with OpenOffice in Linux. Annnnd....she's started saying/writing things like "Windoze" and "Winbloze".

And why am I not a Linux convert and evangelist? As I said earlier:

"And why don't I use Linux and it's applications? By profession, I support users of Windows and Micrsoft Office. If I actually use the stuff, then I can better support the end-users. Annnnnd....I find that MS Office is a polished, easy-to-use, and reliable set of tools. Win2K is very stable (except when start loading up the box with all kinds of strange stuff)."

To expand - any OS is a tool, and any application is a tool. If that tool works reliably, AND is easy to set up (as Windows is and Linux is not), and if it is a standard (as MS Office is), then that's what I'm going to be using.

Bill Gates himself has said that the environment for PCs can change in a heart-beat. Some killer app that will run only on Linux may be headed down the road, and that will change my viewpoint.

But for the near-term, I'm going to continue with Windows.
