- - - - - Back Home In San Jose, CA - - - - -

Yep, made it back home in one piece.

Didn't see a single polar bear in Anchorage. Or at Elmendorf, which is about 2 miles outside of Anchorage.

My attitude toward wild-life is summed up simply: Does it have fangs? Fine, that rapidly retreating human figure is me!

Anchorage has about 260,000 residents, which is 40% of Alaska's population. Just for contrast, San Jose has about 800,000 residents, which is MORE than the entire state of Alaska! To say that Alaska has lots of wide open spaces is definitely understatement. Most of that "open space" is, of course, reserved for the use of Native Americans, or as federal land. That still leaves a lot of room.

Anchorage is bounded on three sides by what the locals call "hills". On the fourth side is a bay. These "hills" are mountains anywhere else, and are jagged, snow-covered fangs. A singularly nasty place to be afoot in anything other than perfect weather, I would think. On the other hand, those "hills" ARE beautiful - even to this wimpy flat-lander from the sissified southern 48. It's just not a place that I'd like to spend a lot of time in. I'm a warm-weather boy from California - I maintain that snow looks good on postcards.

I just KNOW that I'm gonna love Idaho when I go there in about two weeks!
